v/a - reach
Numero’s “Reach” compilation is a necessary and life-affirming reminder of how we can reclaim our pandemic-induced solitude and turn the now ubiquitous algorithm into a force for emotional fulfillment.
Curator Ken Shipley writes in this comp’s liner notes that many songs appeared on this record after showing up in his Youtube autoplay algorithm, but it’s the human touch of Numero’s brave curation and sequencing that make this work much more than a turgid “Spotify Discover Weekly” laid into wax. Organic and digital sounds commingle gently throughout, and the human voice appears so sparsely that each line, even a man documenting birdcall, is imbued with great emotional weight. And how else could such a collection end then with a brief and poignant piece featuring one of humanity’s oldest instruments, the dulcimer.
🌀 Highlight: Masumi Hara - To Live in the Sea
